The quiet erasure, continued: A mother's reckoning

A phenomenological sketch, companion piece to "The Quiet Erasure"

The “symptoms” dramatized here are not simply invented for literary effect.  In some sense this is an extension of the depiction in The Quiet Erasure, from personal/cognitive out to the interpersonal— the new, brief strange hesitation before responding to a child, the reflexive appeal to a chatbot during a disagreement with a spouse, a friend's fleeting reaction of “betrayal” when iPhone is consulted instead of her, the kids learning to outsource advice with their device, on their own conflicts.

It is grounded in a growing body of empirical research on AI-mediated communication, "cognitive surrender," and erosion of trust when third-party (AI) is introduced into dialogue. (See the attached reference list.) AI arbitration in disputes can generate feelings of betrayal and diminished trust between partners; heavy AI reliance correlates with reduced tolerance for open-ended, unresolved conversation. Repeated outsourcing to AI may short-circuit the fundamental processes — friction, disagreement, shared reasoning — through which relationships and informed judgment evolve.

This fictional embodiment of the implications of current research was generated initially by Perplexity.ai, responding to the prompt in the Appendix.

***

She notices it first in the odd, unsettling pause before she responds to her daughter.

Emma, twelve, is talking about a friend who said something cruel at lunch, and there is a beat — just a beat — where instead of immediately reaching inward for the intuitive wisdom passed down to her through her genes, mothers, mentors and experience that she used to trust  her hand moves toward her phone. Not to look anything up, exactly. Just to . . . ask. See what it says. She catches herself sometimes but now not often enough . . .

There used to be a simple “feel” to parenting three children spanning a decade of development — the five-year-old's tantrums, the ten-year-old's homework meltdowns, the fifteen-year-old's silences — the aches, anxieties and fears that were, she now understands, just the “stuff” of becoming and being a mother. She could sit, almost happily with not-knowing. She would fumble lovingly toward an answer with her husband late at night, the two of them turning a problem over and over like a stone, disagreeing, circling back, arriving somewhere. That friction was not a failure of parenting. It was parenting.

Now the chatbot often nails a solution before the disagreement can even properly begin. Her husband raises a concern about, say their son's screen time; she has already asked Grok before he finishes his thought--and reads the confident, bulleted response aloud . . . and watches something flicker across his face that she recognizes, accompanied by a dull twitch in her stomach, something like betrayal — the sense that she trusted a machine over the twelve years of shared understanding and judgment sitting across the table from her. He doesn't argue, he just goes quiet, or he says "sure, ask Grok" in a tone that isn't really agreement. She knows and she has stopped being able to stop it from happening

It has crept into her friendships too, the ones she used to think were immune, sacred even — the two women who have been for fifteen years, her closest confidantes. A coffee that once meandered for two unhurried hours through random, half-formed worries now clips along at a strange new tempo: someone raises a dilemma about an aging parent or a stalled marriage, and within a minute a phone is out,  an answer read aloud in the same bright, decisive register the machine always uses. The three of them used to be really good at not knowing together — that was, she realizes now, most of what the friendship was for. Lately she catches her own thumb moving toward the search bar mid-sentence, cutting off a friend who was still finding her way toward what she actually meant to say. She sees the same flicker she saw in her husband's face, quieter, more practiced, almost in hiding. Women who have known each other that long know when they are being uncoupled . . .

The children get it differently. The five-year-old just wants her eyes; increasingly her eyes are elsewhere, mid-scroll, mid-query, present in body only. The ten-year-old has started saying "never mind" when she starts to answer a question with "let's ask—" before she even finishes what she'll ask. The fifteen-year-old has begun mirroring her: bringing conflicts not to her, but with an overheard comments on the phone to her friend like, ”Wait, wait, wait . .   my bot will know . . .” She senses the unspoken horror of watching your own worst habit reproduce itself in your baby . . . that she taught this. Not through instruction, but through simple, repeated demonstration: an open question is an intolerable thing to leave sitting in a room, on the table.

Even the dog knows. The old beagle, who has spent nine years reading the emotional weather of this house far better than any of them, has taken to sitting at her feet — phone lit, family voices trailing off unanswered in the next room — looking up at her with blank expression, ears low, eyes fixed on her face, asking a question no chatbot could ever answer. She wonders in passing what it says about her that a beagle's face is what finally makes her put down the damn phone.

She knows. It feels like a limb gone slightly numb — present, but slow to move. A strange, cold clarity is emerging of watching herself outsource not her competence as a mom but her most prized possession — her relationships themselves, one deferred, often trivial answer or judgment at a time. Are the people she loves most now quietly resigning to the fact that she is less and less fully in the house with them at all?  And what to do about it is a question that she and Grok and the beagle cannot answer.

Initial prompt (with added subsequent prompts for clarification)

We earlier did a phenomenologically grounded piece that worked well. https://hipoeces.blogspot.com/2026/05/the-quiet-erasure-phenomenological.html. Using the same premise and general approach, create an analogous piece based off the "interpersonal" research we did earlier, where the voice narrating the story is a mother of three, ages 5 to 15 who has apparently become dangerously dependent on her AI chatbot to the extent that very much aware of how it is compromising virtually all of her interpersonal relationships, expecially with her family members and friends . . .and dog.

150th and final Daily (C.S. Lewis–style) Digital Life Litany for Protection, Direction and Stewardship

Caveat emptier: This post was drafted with help from an AI assistant (Perplexity)— but ideated and edited extensively by the human, Bill Acton.

This is fact the 150th and last posting in the Digital Litany Series. It has been a blessing and a kick to collaborate with Perplexity on this project. For about the last two months, however, without explanation, Facebook has been gradually restricting the feed on the series, blocking and deleting posts and photos, possibly because of the relatively small regular number of likes and comments there over an extended period of time. I am moving back to Instagram and Substack, continuing on LinkedIn, along with revamping the haptic website in conjunction with my Legalshield work.

Blessings for protection, direction and your stewardship! Bill

Lord,
you know how easily a bright screen
can become a wardrobe of temptations
or a looking-glass that flatters and distorts.

Teach me to enter this digital world
with imagination guided by truth.

When I am pulled toward distraction,
help me remember
that joy is not the same as novelty,
and wisdom is not the same as speed.

Protect me from the sneers of cynicism

Guard my heart

Lord,
you know that freedom
does not survive by accident.

It must be defended,
disciplined,
and sometimes spoken for
when it is unpopular.

In this digital world,
give me a clear mind
and a firm spine.

Teach me to value responsibility
as much as rights,

Protect my home,

May my online life show

careful judgment,
and a willingness to stand alone
when necessary
are still virtues worth keeping.

Lord,

you know this country

is held together

by ordinary people

doing ordinary things well

even when the world feels loud.

In this digital age,

help me keep faith

with those people.

Teach me to speak plainly,

to listen carefully,

and to remember

that behind every username

is a person with bills to pay,

kids to raise,

Protect my family,

my neighbors,

and the vulnerable

from scams, lies,

and the kind of online cruelty

that wears people down

one comment at a time.

Guard my own heart

Give me the patience

to do the work,

the humility

to admit when I’ve missed it,

and the steadiness

And grant that my stewardship

Lord,

Lord Jesus,

in a world where everyone can speak

and almost no one stops to pray,

teach me to begin with you

before I begin with my opinions.

When I open my phone,

remind me that I am first your disciple,

not my audience’s performer.

Let your Word shape my words—

truth spoken in love,

conviction joined to compassion,

courage that never forgets

the command to love my enemies.

Guard my heart

from building my identity

on arguments and outrage.

Help me remember

that the people I debate

are souls you died for,

not just “the other side.”

Keep me from treating anyone

as beyond hope or beneath respect.

Protect my mind

from half‑truths and easy slogans.

Give me a hunger for wisdom,

for careful reading,

for honest evidence.

And when I am wrong,

grant me the humility

to admit it,

learn,

and grow.

Make my online life

a place where grace is visible:

where I defend what I believe

without despising those who differ,

where I stand for justice

without forgetting mercy,

where I am willing

to be faithful

even when being popular

would be easier.

And grant that my stewardship

of these platforms

shows the fruit of your Spirit—

love, joy, peace,

patience, kindness, goodness,

faithfulness, gentleness,

and self‑control—

so that whatever I say

points not to me,

but back to you.

Caveat emptier: This post was drafted with help from an AI assistant (Perplexity)— but ideated and edited extensively by the human, Bill Acton

Wikipedia

Lord,

you know this is still

a shining city on a hill,

even when the lights

come from screens.

In this electronic town square,

teach me to speak

with confidence and kindness.

When I encounter fear,

division,

or despair online,

let my first instinct

be to offer a word

of perspective and hope.

Protect me from

easy cynicism—

from assuming the worst

of my neighbors,

from believing

every dark rumor

about my country

or my fellow citizens.

Give me a cheerful realism:

able to see the problems,

but unwilling to forget

the possibilities.

Guard my accounts

and devices

from those who would

“tear down this wall”

of privacy

for their own gain.

Help me use

straightforward,

common‑sense measures

to keep my family safe:

good passwords,

limited sharing,

trusted sources.

And grant that my stewardship

of this digital city

adds a little warmth

and light to the place—

humor without cruelty,

conviction without spite,

and an abiding belief

that, by your grace,

our best days

need not be behind us,

online or off.

Daily (Theodore Roosevelt–style) Digital Life Litany for Protection, Direction and Stewardship

Caveat emptier: This post was drafted with help from an AI assistant (Perplexity)— but ideated and edited extensively by the human, Bill Acton

Wikipedia

Lord,
you know I have loved
the strenuous life—
trails and treetops,
reform and rough‑riding.

This glowing frontier
needs its own kind of vigor.

Teach me to speak softly
and carry a big password—
to keep my security strong
while my words stay measured.

Let my courage online
show up not in bluster,
but in defending
the weak and the honest.

Protect me from
the “trusts” of today—
corporations and platforms
that hoard data,
monopolize attention,
and use people
as raw material.

Give me the grit
to question them,
to set limits,
to move elsewhere
when conscience demands.

Guard my children
and grandchildren
from becoming
indoor prisoners
of the screen.

Help me lead them out
into fresh air,
real forests,
and real friendships
that do not depend
on a Wi‑Fi signal.

And grant that my stewardship
of this digital landscape
shows both conservation
and courage—
preserving what is good and wild
in human life,
and pushing back
against anything
that shrinks the soul
for the sake of convenience.

Daily (Arnold Toynbee–style) Digital Life Litany for Protection, Direction and Stewardship

Caveat emptier: This post was drafted with help from an AI assistant (Perplexity)— but ideated and edited extensively by the human, Bill Acton

Wikipedia

Lord,

We are not the first generation
to believe we have discovered
something entirely new—
and we will not be the last
to find out
we were partly wrong.

In this era of global networks
and instant signals,
teach me to see
both the promise
and the peril.

Protect me from despair
when I see signs of decline—
corruption, distraction,
loss of shared meaning.

Remind me that you have
called small groups
and faithful individuals
to answer great challenges before.

Guard me, too,
from naive optimism
that refuses to see the cracks
in our foundations.

Help me face them honestly:
what our technologies do
to attention,
community,
and responsibility.

Let my daily practices
be acts of quiet rebuilding:
truthful speech,
careful security,
thoughtful media choices,
intentional hospitality
even in digital form.

And grant that my stewardship
of this connected world
be one small instance
of a larger renewal—
a response to our time’s challenge
that leans toward wisdom,
not merely novelty.

Daily (“Tokyo Rose”–style) Digital Life Litany for Protection, Direction and Stewardship

Caveat emptier: This post was drafted with help from an AI assistant (Perplexity)— but ideated and edited extensively by the human, Bill Acton

Wikipedia

Lord,
you know the power
of a voice on the air—
how it can comfort,
confuse,
or demoralize
across oceans.

In this era
where a thousand “Tokyo Roses”
speak through feeds and streams,
teach me to be careful
which voices I trust
and which one I add.

Protect me
from propaganda
disguised as familiarity—
accounts that sound friendly,
look human,
and quietly work
to sap courage,
spread doubt,
or turn me
against my own people.

Guard my own words
from becoming
an instrument
of someone else’s manipulation.

Let me refuse
to share stories
that mock the suffering,
undermine the hopeful,
or cheer for despair.

Help me use my voice
for the opposite:
to encourage
those who feel alone,
to remind listeners
that truth still matters,
that solidarity still exists,
that their choices
still count.

And grant that my stewardship
of this digital airwaves
turns broadcasting
into witnessing—
not for defeat,
but for courage;
not for confusion,
but for clarity;
not for humiliation,
but for quiet, resilient hope.

Daily (Barack Obama–style) Digital Life Litany for Protection, Direction and Stewardship

Caveat emptier: This post was drafted with help from an AI assistant (Perplexity)— but ideated and edited extensively by the human, Bill Acton

Wikipedia

Lord,

we live in an extraordinary time—

a nation of citizens

who carry the world

in the palm of their hand.

In this age of constant connection,

help me remember

that my digital life

is part of our common life.

What I choose to say,

share,

and believe

either strengthens

or weakens

the bonds between us.

Teach me to be hopeful

without being naïve,

skeptical

without being cynical.

When a story appears

that confirms my bias,

give me the discipline

to check it,

to listen,

to think twice

before I pass it on.

Protect my family

from the quiet harms—

data harvested,

fear exploited,

time stolen

by endless distraction.

Guard my accounts

and my attention

with simple, steady habits:

strong passwords,

updates applied,

limits on what I allow

into my home and heart.

And grant that my stewardship

of this digital world

reflects what is best in us:

a willingness to learn,

to admit mistakes,

to widen the circle of concern—

so that our online lives,

like our civic lives,

bend a little more

toward justice,

truth,

and grace.

Daily (Lord Acton–style) Digital Life Litany for Protection, Direction and Stewardship

Caveat emptier: This post was drafted with help from an AI assistant (Perplexity)— but ideated and edited extensively by the human, Bill Acton

Wikipedia

Lord,
you taught us,
through history,
that power tends to corrupt,
and absolute power
corrupts absolutely.

In this world
where tiny devices
carry immense power,
teach me to be wary
of what power
does to me.

When I can see
what others share,
judge them quickly,
and speak without consequence,
remind me that this, too,
is a kind of power.

Help me use it
with humility,
not arrogance.

Protect me from systems
that accumulate
too much control—
platforms that know everything,
companies that track everyone,
voices that go unquestioned.

Let me ask
where accountability lies,
and what safeguards
exist.

Guard my own heart
from delighting
in domination—
from enjoying
someone else’s downfall,
from wielding knowledge
to embarrass or coerce.

And grant that my stewardship
of this digital age
honors the warning
you’ve given through time:
that power must be checked,
character must be cultivated,
and freedom is safest
when we remember
our capacity
to go wrong—
and choose,
day by day,
to do better.
