EAPIC Lesson 1 - Syllable Butterfly Cheesesteak!

Objectives:

  • Basic rhythm and syllables (parts of words)
  • Haptic Hacks and Widgets: 
  •     Hacks: Something that you work on by yourself, not in conversation! 
  •     Widgets: Something you CAN use in conversation.) 
  • Syllable Butterfly (Hack)
  • Basic statement and question intonation (melody) widgets: FALL ( \ ) or RISE ( /)

Warm up! (3x each)

  • Upper chest and shoulders (elbows touch)
  • Nasal resonance (ying, yang, yung!)
  • Sing something! (For example: A, E, I, O, U!)
  • Back (‘O’ cone) and chest (Ooo-Wah!) 

READ: What is a syllable? 

  • A syllable is a part of a word, the basic, musical beat in English. There is either light or strong energy on a syllable. 
  • For example, in “Good Morning,” there is light stress on “good” and “-ning,” and strong stress on “Mor-.”

A syllable can be:

  • Just a simple vowel: “I"
  • A consonant or consonants plus a vowel: “by” 
  • A vowel plus a consonant or consonants: “on”
  • A vowel surrounded by consonants “streets”


Syllable Butterfly Training

  • Strong tap on the stressed syllable (deltoid muscle): X 
  • Light tap on unstressed syllables (bachio-radialis): o
  • Only fingers move!

Thursday:  (Today!) Do the video. Print out copy of this blog page! . 

Friday: Do the warm up, training, embodied oral reading (EOR), 4x and keep notes!

               a. Do the MT4s of each line (before speaking) 
               b. Do each rhythm group slowly, with voice and MT4
               c. Do entire EOR with comfortable rhythm.
               d. Do entire EOR with widgets, with as much expression as you can, 2x. 

Saturday: Do the warm up, training, EOR and keep notes!

Sunday: Take the day off with me!

Monday: Do the warm up, training, EOR, practice your target words.

Tuesday: Do the warm up, training, EOR, practice your target words. 

Wednesday: Come to the live feedback 60-minute class on Google Meet (or practice by yourself!)
